The skin cancer surgery procedure is tailored to the individual Chicago patient

Skin cancer treatment, when provided early, has an enormous impact on the outcome of care. Dr. Jonith Breadon, board-certified dermatologist, encourages her patients to receive skin cancer screenings on an annual basis. If skin cancer is detected through the screening and examination process, the surgery procedure we design will consider factors including the size and location of skin cancer, as well as type. We also take into consideration the age of the patient and whether or not this is the first skin cancer diagnosis while planning treatment in our Chicago office.

There are various options for treating skin cancer, with each offering an excellent cure rate:

Surgical excision

The surgical excision of skin cancer is typically very simple. The process is straightforward, beginning with the administration of local anesthetic. An incision is then carefully made around the entire lesion and then some, in order to clear all the margins of the growth. After this section of skin has been removed, the incision is stitched carefully to minimize scarring. The surgical removal of skin cancer typically produces excellent aesthetic results compared to other treatments. Removed tissue is sent to a pathologist, who will confirm that all margins have been cleared. If it seems as though the procedure did not remove all cancerous cells, additional treatment will be scheduled.

Scraping and burning

Man superficial skin cancers can be removed with scraping and burning, which has a cure rate of 80 to 90 percent. Doctors call this procedure electrodessication and curettage, and recommend it primarily for small basal cell cancers on the trunk or the limbs. The result of treatment is usually a small pale scar.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery

In recent years, many dermatologists and their patients have turned to this innovative technique for skin cancer removal. Mohs was developed about 75 years ago, but it has caught on gradually. This procedure is extremely successful in the treatment of basal and squamous cell cancers while also very conservative through its preservation of healthy tissues.

Dr. Jonith Breadon conducts a thorough evaluation of the skin and potential skin cancers. Treatment planning, as well, is approached with attention to detail. To learn more about your treatment options for skin cancer, call (855) 400-3818.
